The Indian tradition of block printing

Contributor Liz Cooper

In the first of our mini series on Indian block printing, to be published over the next few months, the SOURCE discovers the history and secrets behind the craft of Indian block printing.

ARTICLE SUMMARY

SOURCE correspondent Liz Cooper recently travelled to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, also known as the ‘pink city’ due to the colour the walls and forts were painted in 1853 to welcome the Prince of Wales. A district to the south of the city called Sanganer is famous for block printing – using small wooden stamps with shapes carved into them by hand to print layered patterns on cloth. This article delves into the history of the area, as well discovering how to tell the difference between block printing and machine screen printing, and profiles Sakshi Foundation, the family-run organisation which draws on generations of expertise in the craft.
