Ethics Girls and the IPS business structure

Contributor Lucinda Borrell

Ethics Girls

Following last month's analysis of the pros and cons of the cooperative business structure, Lucinda Borrell looks to Ethics Girls, an Industrial & Provident Society (IPS) and a cooperative enterprise that puts the values of fair business above and beyond profits. As a retailer of women’s ethical fashion we consider the challenges and opportunities they faced as an IPS.

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

For the past year, Ethics Girls has been run as a co-operative and registered as an IPS (Industrial Provident Society). All 60 members, including staff suppliers and consumers, receive a voting share and the opportunity to take part in the business strategy.

The cooperative/IPS structure is ideal for online businesses, as it has an open and honest approach, helping to promote the business growth and transparency expected from a social enterprise. As customers become members, they invest in a community. Less marketing is required as members are more likely to remain loyal to the brand as an invested party.

SOURCE Intelligence Market and Sales Editor, Lucinda Borrell, evaluates the challenges and opportunities of this business structure.
